Rescue dogs

Rescue dogs are trained for searching lost people in different
circumstances. Maybe you have seen on TV rescue dogs working on
earthquake areas. With their trained nose they can tell where the
victim lies. In Finland rescue dogs are usually used when older people,
children or other people have got lost in the forest.

Rescue dogs are part of a bigger organization called Volontary Rescue
Service. It consists of several different organizations, like Red Cross
and local hunting clubs.

SVs as rescue dogs

Swedish Vallhund can be a good rescue dog thanks to its good
nose, working nature and agility. I started to train Huikka
(in the photo left up) when she was just a puppy and searching
people became her passion. We trained on the ruins and in the
woods. We have passed all the exams for rescue dogs. We have been
members in the alarm group which is called to help when somebody
has got lost. Huikka keep on searching even when there is lots of
snow, despite of her short legs.

Nakke also began rescue dog training when he was a puppy.
We started with tracking and continued with search. Nakke loves
people, so it´s not difficult to motivate him.

There are also some other rescue SVs in Finland. In Sweden
there are two SVs who has made the official exam for rescue dogs:
Krösaskogens Ditte and Nakke´s father Grålötens Acke Ackspett
(in the photos down and right up).
